What is self-control and why is it important? Self-control refers to our ability to handle strong emotions when facing difficulties, such as frustration, disappointment or worry. Exercising self-control means we can regulate our behaviours and delay short-term gratification in favour of achieving long-term goals.

Self-control is a key factor in developing resilience. When we’re able to properly process strong emotions, handle difficult situations and practise patience, we build self-belief.
